CVS Shopping Trip for the Weekly Ad of 3/4: Shopper in Training ~ Share Yours {Linky}

As most of you know I am not currently shopping until after we move in April, but I have given my daughter a $50 "Shopper In Training" CVS Gift Card Challenge and a $50 gift card I earned on Swagbucks.  As she learns to shop at CVS she will share her journey here at Simply CVS thru her "lessons and assignments" and her weekly shopping trips.  So here's Elizabeth's weekly trip description and summary:

My first CVS shopping trip!  I had everything ready to go from yesterday.  To start with I have decided that I only want to do deals that come out to $.50 or less per item (after ECB) because I want keep it simple and have a rule to keep me from spending too much at one time.

First thing when I went in, I got the paperwork for my new card, filled it out, and so have a shiny new card to work with!  My mom says I should copy it
in case I manage to lose all three of the cards—she has read of others who have.

They had the display for the jelly beans right up front, so those were easy to find.  I found one bottle of the Softsoap body wash on clearance (had to scan it to be sure).  I did not have any of the coupons, but decided to do the deal anyway because I could get 2 for $.74 and so keep within my spending rule.  They did not have signs up for the Colgate deal, so I skipped that for this week because I knew some people had mentioned it not printing out and I did not want to risk it.

Went up to the cashier with a smile on my face and trying to look confident as a reader suggested.  I even did 2 transactions.  Everything went great and printed out correctly.  I even remembered to have her scan my Green Bag Tag so I am 1/4 the way to getting rewarded for that!

The only bad thing was that they did not have any of the little papers to scan to join the Beauty Club, so I lost the credit for the body wash, but I will sign up for that online soon and not miss anything else.

I am going to use the same posting format as my mom since we all are used to it here.

$50 Shopper in Training CVS Gift Card Challenge Balances:

Total Saved:  $ 4.75   (including tax)
Total Value of Products Purchased:  $ 10.17  (without tax)
Gift Card Balance:  $ 43.80
Extra Buck Balance:  $ 5.00
Total CVS Spending Power:  $ 48.80  (GC balance and ECB balance combined)

This week's trip's details (I did two transactions so I could use the extra buck from the first transaction on the second one):

Saved:  $ 4.43 + $.32 tax = $4.75  (some of my tax is paid on coupon values, this is the tax on the total product less the tax I paid--that is all I saved on tax)
Spent:  $5.74  + $.46  tax = $ 6.20
Beginning Extra Bucks Balance: $0
Total Extra Bucks used:  $ .99
Total Extra Bucks earned:  $ 5.99
Ending Extra Bucks Balance:  $5.00

NOTE:  Because I often do multiple transactions my total extra bucks earned may differ from the ending extra buck balance and the total used may exceed the beginning balance as I use some from one transaction on another.

Transaction #1:

1 – Bag Jelly Beans @ $.99 get $.99 extra bucks (these will go in the shoe box I am filling for Operation Christmas Child)

Spent:  $.99 + $.07 tax
Extra Bucks used:  $ 0
Extra Bucks earned:  $ .99

Transaction #2:

1 – Softsoap Body Wash @ $3.50 (part of buy 2 get $5 Extra Buck weekly deal)
1 – Softsoap Body Wash @ $2.24 – Clearance (part of buy 2 get $5 Extra Buck weekly deal)
(I would have done better if I could have found 2 bottles on clearance, but I still did pretty good.  Also, the bodybutter Vanilla smells fabulous!)

Spent:  $ 4.75 + $ .39 tax
Extra Bucks used:  $ .99
Extra Bucks earned:  $ 5.00

Check out these and all of this week's CVS deals.  Also, read how I have learned (from others) how to "stack" the coupons in the right order to pay for tax.  Some states have to pay tax on extra buck usage and some don't so it may or may not affect your CVS shopping.  And if you don't have any, or many, extra bucks check out how to have the least out of pocket cash when beginning or check out these scenarios for spending just $5 or $10 out of pocket for several items.

Step by Step CVS Shopping for Beginners

I started a step by step lesson series on how to begin CVS shopping as I began as a "new shopper" with a new card and no extra bucks.  You can check out the series by clicking the banner to the left.

I had a great time creating my own sales at CVS yesterday when the Magic coupon machine gave me a bunch of fantastic coupons. Combined with a 20% off coupon I scored some great deals!

Here's what I got:

2x Bustello coffee $5
Pellegrino water $1.34
Revlon lip butter $7.89
Thermacare menstrual heat wraps $6.99
Pronutrients supplment $12.99

Total= $34.21

Used 20% off (took of $5.85)
$3 Revlon CVS
$3 Thermacare CVS
$2 Thermacare Mfr
$4 Pronutrients CVS
$5 Pronutrients Mfr
$7 ECB

Paid $4.23+tax OOP
Got back $4 ECB for Revlon and $1 ECB for green bag tag.

Transaction 2
When I saw that the Pellegrino was 3 for $4 I had to pick up more! I drink it every day!

So I picked up 3 for $4 and used my $4 ECB I had just earned and paid only 10c in tax.

I'm excited to get items I would have purchased at the grocery store anyway for only $5 OOP!

Fantastic, Melissa. Gotta love great scanner coupons. I really like getting groceries, too. That's when I really feel like I am saving.

Wow, Melissa! You did great. The scanner would not give me coupons with the new card, but I have great hopes for next week. Thanks for sharing.

2 Filipo Berio olive oils $3.99 ea
1 Oreo snack size
1 Dr. Scholls orthotic insert $9.29
1 Gold Emblem jelly beans 99c
1 clearance Vday cinnamon hearts 49c
2-$1 off Filipo Berio IPs
1 Scanner free Oreos
$2 off Dr. Scholls IP
Paid with $2 ECB and ~$12 OOP

$12 OOP is pretty high for me at CVS, but I wanted to stock up on olive oil and the sale/coupon pair hadn't shown up in a while. Also the Dr. Scholls insert is great for plantar fasciitis heel pain, and I'm due for a new pair--this week's sale actually beats out next week's where it's buy $20 get $8 but the inserts' non-sale price go for $17.99.

I got the $3 Revlon cosmetics scanner Q that day, but decided to hold on to it to come home and decide what I wanted instead of buying on the fly. For Elizabeth, when you start getting scanner Qs, my advice is to not immediately use it right then and there, which when I started I always had the urge to and often did. However, then I would find a better sale that came along the next week when the Q would have still been good for, and kick myself then.

I took the Revlon $3 Q in the next day and picked out a pretty nail polish that's going for the $4.79 get $3 ECB deal this week, and turned it into a nice little money maker :)

I have lumped all my shopping trips into one post. I had 2 trips for CVS. 1 on Friday and 1 on Sunday.

I also called about the colgate sensitive toothpaste that was on sale last week, that didn't print, they have now credited me the 2 ECBS, said I should have received it.

checkout my multiple shopping trips in this post here: http://learningtospendlessandsavemore.blogspot.com/2012/03/cvs-woodmans-kohls-jcp.html

Did some awesome work I think!

I had noticed the Filipo back in the ad after a long absence. Seems it used to be in every couple of weeks. You got a lot of great grocery items--always my favorite to pick up and save one. Great advice on the scanner coupons, thanks.
