This is a post I put up a long time ago, but I have had several readers ask the question "what happens if I pay with extra bucks and have to return the item?" over the past month so I thought I would repeat it. Returns at CVS with a receipt are simple--they have great customer service and if you have a problem with a product they will make it right. But what happens when you don't pay cash? When you use an Extra Buck to pay for your item you want to return?
Each receipt has a bar code that will be scanned before the item to be returned is scanned. This ensures that the item was purchased on that receipt and the proper dollar amount will be returned. If extra bucks
were used to pay and the balance is, say, tax only the register will want to only return up to the amount paid with cash. The cashier will have to override this and the return will put on a "money card," which is what they also use for returns with no receipt. It is used just like a gift card.

Thanks for posting this. I had this question in my head for about a week.
I had to return one of the TV remotes that we got for free after ECBS for the Black Friday sale. It didn't work, and they didnt want to return it "because it was FREE after ECBs." The store was really hateful about it, even though I had my receipt. The computer beeped, and the lady said, "See? The computer knows I'm doing something I shouldn't be doing!" UGH!
I am confused about this one Anonymous. DId you paid for the remote with cash or ECB?
This is good to know, I don't return much but you never know what might happen.
anonymous Were you trying to return or exchange it? I can see why they did not want to give cash back when the item was free after ECB, though they definitely should exchange it. If they gave you a gift card, you'd be making money.
I don't return items that I got for free. It's just bad business. They will hate more couponers that way , too. Just choke it up as a loss , you only paid uncle Sam.
Ana, I'm not referring to free after extra buck items, I am referring to any item we buy that we pay for with our extra bucks earned on other items. If there is a problem with a product I don't see anything wrong with returning it. CVS doesn't do exchanges because of inventory, so you need to return it and then buy it again.
Thanks for writing this Cheryl, I was wondering about it. I agree, if there is a problem with a product, I see no reason why you should not be able to return it. As long as ...of course, you do not abuse the system.
that's interesting. if cashier do the return and only gives back what you paid for in cash then shouldn't they return ur ecbs the you used as well? so you could buy what you want
I agree w/ ana,if CVS doesn't do exchanges, then I think morally you should buy the same item w/ the gift card, though there is no way to force that. If they don't have it - I've gotten plenty of other items free. Just my opinion.
I know the post isn't about returning free items, though.
