My CVS Shopping Trip 12/26/2011 Ad ~ Another Money Maker: Trip #20 of the $50 Gift Card Challenge

Not pictured:  two apple juices.
I went armed with a stack of coupons for the hair care items being reported on clearance hoping to score a few--didn't happen.  Lots of 75% off clearance signs, but no stock.  So I settled on the 50% Fruitopia Shampoo and hair spray.  Which was nice as it was included in the spend $30 on CVS brands and get $10 CVS cash card (they actually just issued me a normal CVS GC).

A couple of weeks ago I stopped to ask our manager a question and she happened to be putting out the Reinventing Beauty Magazines. There was a large stack of the coupon inserts in  a separate bundle.  I didn't even
notice what she was doing until I began to walk away and she said, "here, I know you like these," and she handed me a few for myself and a few for Sarah.  And we each have purchased the magazine with coupons so I had quite a few to use and our store had lots of Fruitopia clearance stock.

I had a $4/$20 coupon so I pulled out my rain checks to help me reach the $20--since I had to divide my transactions I needed a little extra umph.  I also grabbed the clearance Disney cups for my Operation Christmas Child shoe box stockpile. I have a goal of filling 100 shoe boxes for needy kids this coming Christmas season so I need to step up my deal shopping (I've even started hitting Rite Aid for deals--shh, don't say that out loud).

I was in need of apple juice and Sudafed--and since I bought CVS brand they counted toward the spend $30 get $10 CVS cash card deal.  I also had a $5 extra buck print from my beauty club purchases when I scanned my card.  My out of pocket was high this week, but I am using CVS gift cards earned on previous deals so actually it is nothing out of my budget and the overall trip still became a money maker.

I am currently doing a $50 Beginner's CVS Gift Card Challenge seeing how much I can get for a $50 gift card I earned on Swagbucks with a new CVS Extra Care Card just like a new shopper would be able to get.  The challenge will end when I run out of gift card and cash to be able to pay the tax.  I will  most likely have extra bucks left over, but without cash to pay the tax they are basically useless so this challenge will end.

I received another $2.99 rebate yesterday from a product purchased with this gift card, so I've added that to the total (less the $.44 for the stamp).  So with the money making shopping trip and the rebate my total spending power at CVS has increased for the sixth week in a row.  Deal shopping at CVS never ceases to amaze me.

$50 Beginner's CVS Gift Card Challenge Balances:

Total Saved:  $ 1228.95  (including tax)
Total Spent:  $ 66.38 (including tax) -- some of the total is from gift cards earned with the $50 gift card
Total Value of Products Purchased:  $  1214.69 (without tax)
Gift Card Balance:  $  30.56*  (began with a $50 GC earned on Swagbucks)
Gift Cards Earned Balance :  $  33.06* (these are CVS gift cards earned on deals purchased with this $50 GC)
Cash from Rebates Balance:  $  12.11* (from rebates sent in on products purchased with this gift card--less stamps)
Extra Buck Balance:  $  10.99* (I began with no extra bucks with this gift card)
*Total CVS Spending Power Balance:  $ 86.72

This week's trip's details:

I did several transactions because of limits stated on the coupons, but for ease I am just lumping them all together here.

Used a $4/$20 CVS coupon that was in my online account last week.  I waited to print it until the last day it was available so it had a later expiration date.

*1 -- CVS brand Decongestant (Sudafed) @ $7.39
*4 -- Fruitopia Shampoos @ $1.74
Used 4 -- $1.50/1 CVS coupons from the Reinventing Beauty Magazine
[for some reason these scanned at $2]
*2 -- Fruitopia Hair Sprays @ $2.09
Used 2 -- $1.50/1 CVS coupons from the Reinventing Beauty Magazine
[for some reason these scanned at $2]
*4 -- Gold Emblem Apple Juices at $3.19 each B1G1 Sale [I used a rain check for these]
*2 -- Essence of Beauty trial size body wash @ $1.99 each
Used 1 -- $1/2 Essence of Beauty item coupon from the Reinventing Beauty Magazine
*1 -- Essence of Beauty purse size hand cream @ $1.99
Used the free coupon offered last week on Facebook
3 -- Clearance Disney cups @ $.50 each
1 -- Combos @ $2.00 get $2.00 extra bucks [used a rain check]
1 -- Finish Quantum @ $2.99 get $2.99 extra bucks [used a rain check--extra buck printed at $3.00]
1 -- Zyrtec @ $5.99 get $5.99 extra bucks
Used a $2/1 Zyrtec Printable manufacturer coupon
1 -- $10 CVS Gift Card (they issued me a regular gift card instead of the new cash card)
Used my free coupon that printed when I reached the $30 spent on CVS products

*part of the spend $30 get $10 CVS cash card deal.

Saved:  $ 75.24 + $ 4.54 tax = $ 79.78 (some of my tax is paid on coupon values, this is the tax on the total product less the tax I paid--that is all I saved on tax)
Spent:  $ 4.34 + $ .83  tax = $ 5.17 (the CVS coupons really reduced my tax this time--they act like a sale)
Beginning Extra Bucks Balance: $ 12.00
Total Extra Bucks used:  $ 17.00
Total Extra Bucks earned:  $ 15.99 ($5 was the beauty club reward)
CVS Cash Card Earned:  $ 10.00

NOTE:  Because I often do multiple transactions my total extra bucks earned may differ from the ending extra buck balance and the total used may exceed the beginning balance as I use some from one transaction on another.

Check out these and all of this week's deals.  Also, read how I have learned (from others) how to "stack" the coupons in the right order to pay for tax.  Some states have to pay tax on extra buck usage and some don't so it may or may not affect your CVS shopping.  And if you don't have any, or many, extra bucks check out how to have the least out of pocket cash when beginning or check out these scenarios for spending less than $5 or $10 out of pocket for several items.
