My CVS Shopping Trip for the Weekly Ad of 5/29 ~ Saved $27.67

I had a super small list this week of extra buck deals I wanted to do.  I did two transactions though, to have less out of pocket.  In the first transaction I had $.50 too many extra bucks to use so I was trying to decide on a $.50 item to buy and remembered the L'Oreal clearance and I had $2 coupon to make it $1.07 so I paid a little out of pocket, but was able to put the $.50 extra buck towards it.

Here is what I got and how I paid (I use gift cards I earn online so all is
basically free):

Saved:  $ 27.67
Spent:  $ .55  + tax
Extra Bucks used:  $ 6.00
Extra Bucks earned:  $ 6.99

NOTE:  I do not figure in the extra bucks earned in the % saved, I will figure those in the week I use them.  I also figure the % saved before the tax, as I also saved tax by not spending the full amount and that would take quite some figuring.  So my % saved is the total saved off the total original price before tax and extra bucks earned.

Transaction #1:

2 -- M&M's single @ 2/$1 get $1 extra bucks back (tucking these away on the baking shelf for Christmas cookies)

1 -- L'Oreal Visible Under eye concealer @ 75% off = $3.07 (another stocking stuffer)
Used a $2.00/1 Manufacturer insert coupon (my extra buck was $.50 more than my products so I grabbed this)

2 -- Oral B Toothbrushes @ $1.99 each get $1 extra buck back each (for my Operation Christmas Child Stockpile)
Used a $1.50/2 Oral B Indicator toothbrush insert coupon

2 -- Green Bag Tags (an extra one for in my daughter's purse and another for another re-usable bag)
used 2 -- free Green Bag Tag coupons that printed last week at CVS

Spent:  $.55 + tax
Extra Bucks used:  $  4.00
Extra Bucks earned:  $ 3.00

Transaction #2:

1 -- Preparation H Wipes @ $3.99 get $3.99 extra bucks
Used a $2/1 Printable coupon

Spent:  $.00 + tax
Extra Bucks used:  $ 2.00 (from toothbrushes above)
Extra Bucks earned:  $ 3.99

Check out these and all of this week's deals.  Also, read how I have learned (from others) how to "stack" the coupons in the right order to pay for tax.  Some states have to pay tax on extra buck usage and some don't so it may or may not affect your CVS shopping.  And if you don't have any, or many, extra bucks check out how to have the least out of pocket cash when beginning or check out these scenarios for spending less than $5 or $10 out of pocket for several items.
You can read about all of my CVS shopping trips or check out what deals others got this week and if you blog about your CVS weekly shopping trips link up there, if not, share your trip details there in a comment.  You can also check out FrugalMom's frugal shopping trips in the Simply CVS $25 Gift Card Challenge.

I would love to save m&m's for Christmas... but they don't even make it to the truck.... :( lol

Awesome! I've been trying like crazy to get those tags.. But none of my stores have them :( kinda sucks too as they give me the coupon for one but nobody has them!

Cheryl said...

Debbie, our store has always had a great stock. If I were you, I'd call 800shopcvs and talk with them about it. They have great customer service and are very friendly. They may even send you one. Worth a try.

My stores don't have the tag in either, but they said I can use the coupon, even though it expires today.

I have a question though. Can you have several tags on your account? How will that work?

Cheryl said...

JR, the tags are all exactly the same. The only advantage to numerous tags is to be sure you have one with you. Put an extra one on your key ring, another bag, the diaper bag, the buggy :-). Whatever, so you will always be able to use one. You can still only scan it once a day.

I tried to read the pay for tax post a few days ago, and maybe I was tired when reading it, but I didn't get it.

Would you be able to do a post that gives like a Cliff's Notes, barebones version of what i need to do and why, to hopefully one day get that $0 total.

Thanks a ton!

RJ, it is so hard to get lessons down on paper (or rather computer screens). If you could sit down with me we could get it together :-). Basically, give your extra bucks first and then your manufacturer coupons. But you need to add up how much they will be so the last one does not make you go in the negative.

R.J. from Extremely Normal Couponing said...

How does that reduce the tax burden on them? Still new to all of this coupon math!

Do you have Skype and a webcam? Maybe we could Skype and you could teach me "in person"...

Cheryl said...

No Skype here :-). What happens is manufacturer coupons can pay for the tax amount.

Sub-total $10.00 + tax $.50

Extra Bucks -$7.00

Manufacturer coupons -$3.25

Total $.25

If you give Manu. coupons first they will adjust your extra bucks down to equal the sub-total and you pay $.50 in tax.

I went to my favorite CVS last week and this week but they were still out of green tags. The store manager knew that the cvs coupons for green tags were expiring for many loyal shoppers so he substituted the green tags for another cvs product...it was the doggy tote bag (picture of dog on it). I had 3 accounts (mine, my sister, and my mother in law) so I scored 3 doggy tote bags. I love my local CVS and their staff.

Cheryl said...

Anon, that is great idea to substitute!

That description is absolutely perfect and short and to the point! You rock! Come spam my Facebook page if you want (once)!

Cheryl said...

LOL, RJ, I am not much of a spammer but I will stop by and say "hey." I was just wondering if you had ever come back and read this and it made any more sense. Glad to hear it did.

We usually keep reusable bags in the trunk, and I hated forgetting the bag with the green bag tag whenever we happened to pop into CVS. To fix this, I cut out the barcode from one of the bag tags and superglued it to the front of my extracare card on my car keys. That way, I'm never without it and it's always handy! Hope that helps!

Grrreat tip, Justian!

My store was out of the green bag tags. I need to check to see if my coupon is still good!
