My CVS Shopping Trip the Week of 1/23/2011 ~ Saved $68.05 and Stocked up On Cereal

My cereal stock has been dwindling—my mom loves Special K, even for snacks so I am always looking for a deal—and our Cheerios were frightfully low. I like to keep about six weeks worth for sale cycles to come back around.  Sarah had noticed the CVS monthly deal on cereal last week so I went prepared to do these deals when shopping this week.

I wasn’t sure if you could mix kinds of cereal
or not for the deal and the manager said since it was all together on an end cap display it should work, if not they would print it for me.  Well, the way my coupons were I needed to mix Special K and Cheerios in one and it did not print an $8 extra buck for two deals, just a $4 extra buck so she printed me another $4 one.  So I don’t know if you can’t mix them, or if it limits it to one deal per transaction.  The limit is 5 deals per card.

I had $8 in extra bucks to begin with so did three transactions so I could roll the extra bucks and save more out of pocket cash. I could have done more to save even more, but I wanted some left for next week and I am trying to limit my number of transactions to three.

Total Trip:

Saved:  $ 68.05 or 86%
Spent:   Sub-total: $ 10.81, tax: $ 1.72, Total: $12.53 (I keep reminding my self—I will spend more to save more in accordance with my 2011 strategy, I had gotten used to near zero out of pocket and it became a challenge to me to do that, but I was missing out on savings)
Extra Bucks used:  $ 23.98
Extra Bucks earned:  $ 22.98 (but I rolled some from one transaction to the next, so I only have $7.00 left)

NOTE:  I do not figure in the extra bucks earned in the % saved, I will figure those in the week I use them.  I also figure the % saved before the tax, as I also saved tax by not spending the full amount and that would take quite some figuring.  So my % saved is the total saved off the total original price before tax and extra bucks earned.

Transaction #1:

4 – Sobe @ $1.50 each [used a rain check for b1g1 free and two free coupons so all 4 were free]
2 – Extra Gums @ $.67 each [used two $.75/1 printable coupons—they were adjusted down to the sale price]
2 – Crest Pro Health Rinse @ $3.99 each get $3.99 extra bucks each

Spent:  Sub-total: $.00 + $ .88 tax = Total:  $ .88
Extra Bucks used:  $ 8.00
Extra Bucks earned:  $ 7.98

Transaction #2:

2 – Boxes Cheerios ** [used a $1/2 Printable coupon]
4 – Boxes Special K ** [Used two Buy one get one free printables]
**Prices were $3/10 get $4 in extra bucks back but actually the Special K rang up at $3.19

Spent:  Sub-total:  $ 3.07 + $.37 tax = Total:  $ 3.44
Extra Bucks used:  $ 7.98
Extra Bucks earned:  $ 8.00

 Transaction #3:

1 – Boost 6-pk @ $5.99 get $1.00 extra bucks [used a rain check for this deal and a $3 manufacturer coupon; and then it is also on a monthly deal with $1 extra buck back and it printed too]  I also want to thank a special Simply CVS reader who sent me some Boost coupons since my Mom drinks it often.
1 – Tilex Mildew Remover @ $2 [used a $1/1 printable]
3 – Cheerios @ $3/10 get $4 in extra bucks [used a $1/2 printable]
1 – Gold Emblem Saltines @ $.66 clearance price
1 – Gold Emblem Apple Juice @ $1.50 [used a rain check]
1 – Quaker quick oats @ $1.69 [used a rain check and $1/1 manufacturer coupon]

Spent:  Sub-total:  $ 7.74 + $ .47 tax = Total: $8.21
Extra Bucks used:  $ 8.00
Extra Bucks earned:  $ 7.00 [one was for the green bag tag usage]

Check out these and all of this week's deals.  Also, read how I have learned (from others) to "stack" the coupons in the right order to pay for tax.  Some states have to pay tax on extra buck usage and some don't so it may or may not affect your CVS shopping.  And if you don't have any, or many, extra bucks check out how to have the least out of pocket cash when beginning or check out these scenarios for spending less than $5 or $10 out of pocket for several items.

You can read about all of my CVS shopping trips or check out what deals others got this week and if you blog about your CVS weekly shopping trips link up there, if not, share your deal details there in a comment.

Does anyone know if you let extra bucks expire if they will still take them. I had some expire on Saturday that I forgot all about and I thought I read some place that most CVS's will except them for up to 2 weeks late... I'm hoping this is so or I'm out $10 :(

It's nice that you have a manager that will work with you.

Cheryl @ Simply Shoeboxes said...

Rhonda, that is up to the individual store manager. You will need to ask at your store. My store used to take them for 7 days, but now she said CVS was cracking down apparently and she would not take them expired. But I have even heard of stores taking them forever. I hope you can use them, that is so disappointing to miss using them.

It is, Sunny. We have a little store and I see her calling many people by name.

I have a $10 EB from the free excedrin, so I was going to buy 2 of the Crest Mouthwash (the limit is 2 now!!) and I have a 5 off Almay q that I got from the company, and a 3 off q that i got from the coupon machine last week. The current almay deals is buy 10 get back 4 EB.
Here's my scenario:
Buy 2 Crest Mouthwash - 3.99, 3.99
Buy 1 Almay foundation - 10.49
Use 10 EB
Use 5 off almay q
Use 3 off almay q
Pay .47 cents
Get back $12!! :)
And i'm going to wait until next week to buy coke, because this week it's 5 for 15, next week its 3 for 8, which ends up being 6 for 16! :)

Thank you so much... I am going to try and use them this weekend.. :) I'll let you know how I make out :)

Sounds like a great plan, Emily! Combining CVS coupons, manufacturer coupons and extra bucks back is what makes CVS shopping phenomenal.

Great, Rhonda, I hope it works out fine for you.

I just started paying attention to coupons and your site has been a great help!

I went to my local CVS today and got the following:

- Crest ProHealth mouthwash (x2)
- Cheerios (x3)
- Special K (x3)
- Gum (x2)

I paid out of pocket less than $22 and got back $15.98 back in Extra Bucks. Bottom line is that I was able to stock up while getting some great deals at the same time.

Thanks again for the tips and looking forward to next weeks deals.

Welcome to couponing & CVSing, Chaz. You had a great trip, too--looks a lot like mine. I'll start working on the coupon match-ups in the morning for next week and they will all be up by Friday evening.

You are really a champ at the CVS savings game Cheryl! I'm in awe.....

Frugality Is Free

Cheryl @ Simply Shoeboxes said...

Thanks, JR. It is a different game now than it was even a year ago which was different from the year before. Changing rules keep us players on our toes.

Awesome job Cheryl! I haven't gone to CVS in a week or two, so maybe today I will get out and see if I can use up a pile of rainchecks that I have so I don't lose the ecbs that I got a few weeks ago.

Cheryl @ Simply Shoeboxes said...

Rainchecks are wonderful for just that, Missy. Our store is always so well stocked now that I rarely get them.

I LOVE it when you can get such great deals on groceries at CVS :) Way to go Cheryl!

Cheryl @ Simply Shoeboxes said...

I do too, Denise. I get kind of bored of more health & beauty items :-). They seem to be offering more and more food lately.
